Egyszerre elszomorító és szürreális látomás egy kikötőváros a sivatag közepén. Rakodódaru, hajók és csónakok, amiket homok vesz körbe. Nem valami távoli múltból itt maradt emlékek ezek: ma is élnek az egykori halászok, akik néhány évtizede még a világ negyedik legnagyobb taván dolgoztak. Ám a szovjet vízgazdálkodás mindent elvett tőlük, mára kilométerekre kerültek a parttól. Tevék kóborolnak az Aral-tó kiszáradt mederben, és teherautók szállítják a kinccsé vált ivóvizet a falvak lakóinak. Vajon mihez kezdenek azok, akik mégis itt maradtak?

The Aral Sea in Central Asia was once one of the four biggest lakes in the world. But the lake was drained as a result of various irrigation projects initiated by the former Soviet Union, and today, it has largely disappeared. In this beautiful shot about the port city Zhalanash, we only see the remains of a once flourishing area of the Soviet economy. Fishing boats erode in the dusty desert, a lonely camel wanders an empty street, meanwhile, a man drives his truck to sandy villages to deliver water to the remaining residents. The film is not only an expressive landscape, but first of all a portrait about the people, who invested their hopes in this city, and now trying to find themselves among the wrecks of ships and port cranes.

Mi a közös a norvég rénszarvaspásztorban, és a moszuli tábor egyik menekültjében? Hát a tokiói minilakás, vagy az ugandai lombkunyhó lakójában? Épp az, ami a lagosi kalyibavárosban élőkben, és mondjuk a NASA-kutatókban, akik a hawaii vulkán kősivatagában készülnek a Mars-expedícióra, és csak űrruhában léphetnek ki a bázisról. Mindannyian olyan körülmények között élnek, amit a mi fogalmaink szerint legalábbis extrémnek nevezhetünk. Élni lehetséges ezekben az építményekben, de vajon valóban otthonok ezek? Tényleg bárhol teremthetünk magunknak otthont? Ha valakik, hát ők tudják rá a választ.

The documentary takes viewers on a journey across four continents to explore the inventive ways in which people are constructing their homes. Bertram visits locations where inhabitants are faced with extreme social, economic and environmental challenges, from a shanty town on a lagoon in Lagos to a six square metre dwelling in Tokyo; and a refugee camp outside Mosul. The Human Shelter is about what people value or “need” in their lives, and finally what makes people feel at home. An important study, that any architect would be foolish not to cultivate.
